Virgin Australia is introducing the nation’s inaugural airline baggage tracking system across over 66% of its domestic network starting tomorrow. This innovation empowers passengers with real-time information about the location of their luggage throughout the entire travel process.

Incorporating the convenience of digital tracking into the travel journey, Virgin Australia’s enhanced travel experience marks a significant step within the airline’s comprehensive transformation initiative.

Developed over a span of two years, this tool addresses the persistent issue of lost baggage encountered by travelers worldwide. Notably, Virgin Australia significantly surpasses the industry average for mishandled baggage, boasting a rate of just 1.5 incidents per 1,000 passengers – a remarkable fivefold improvement compared to the latest industry standard*.

This pioneering technology, being the first of its kind in the market, is poised to alleviate passengers’ concerns about baggage mishaps on their future flights.

The advancement will also boost passengers’ confidence, Virgin Australia foresees an increase in checked baggage due to the implementation of this advanced tracking tool.

Virgin Australia Group Chief Customer and Digital Officer, Paul Jones said the airline is proud to be the first airline in the country to offer travellers a baggage tracking tool.

“It’s our mission to be Australia’s most loved airline and that means we need to listen to our customers to ensure we are offering the services that are most important to them,” said Mr Jones.

“We know the potential of lost baggage is a concern for travellers globally and anticipate today’s announcement will give many guests that extra level of comfort knowing where their bag is at every step of the journey,”

“We are also proud to be able to launch this new feature while having some of the lowest figures in the market when it comes to mishandled or lost bags, with a mishandled baggage rate of just 1.5 per 1,000 guests – five times better than the last recorded industry average,”

“We are a business that intently listens to its people and customers, and we are excited to have many more announcements in the pipeline that we know will make our guests’ flying experience that touch more wonderful,” he said.

Virgin Australia baggage tracking will be available on select flights departing the following airports from 28 August 2023

In the last 24 months, Virgin Australia has dedicated over $400 million to enhancing customer experiences and implementing novel technologies. Up to this point, the airline has unveiled fresh websites, upgraded applications, a novel loyalty management framework, advanced high-speed Lounge and in-flight Wi-Fi, groundbreaking technologies, and additional innovations.

Integral to this substantial investment, the airline recently divulged a $110 million plan aimed at revamping the interiors of their existing Boeing 737 fleet.

The overhaul encompasses the introduction of new seating arrangements, in-flight Wi-Fi, and in-seat power outlets – features that were identified as especially significant to passengers based on input from members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program.
