Microlise Introduces Next-Generation AI Distraction Cameras To Improve Driver Safety

Microlise has launched AI-powered distraction cameras combining fatigue detection and ADAS to improve driver safety, as distracted driving is linked to nearly 30% of fatalities and 45% of serious crashes in Australia, with the system detecting risks like drowsiness and phone use in real time.

Microlise, a leading supplier of innovative transport technology solutions in Australia, has announced its next-generation AI-powered distraction cameras for commercial vehicles.

The new and improved camera system combines AI-driven distraction and fatigue detection with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to help operators proactively manage driver fatigue and distraction and reduce risk on the road and support compliance.

With almost 30% of all fatal accidents and 45% of serious injury crashes in Australia linked to distracted driving, the new cameras are designed to spot the signs before an incident occurs.

They offer significantly expanded detection of fatigue and distraction events such as yawning and signs of driver drowsiness, in addition to detection of phone use, smoking, eating and seatbelt non-compliance.

The inward-facing camera uses artificial intelligence to detect high-risk distracted behaviours to alert drivers in real-time and support safer driving habits. Simultaneously, ADAS technology monitors the road ahead, warning drivers of potential hazards.

The new AI distraction camera, powered by Streamax under a new partnership with Microlise, integrates with and is a core component of Microlise’s multi-camera system, delivering a truly seamless, fully integrated and elevated camera experience for operators.

Microlise’s multi-camera solution is built to give fleet operators a complete view of their vehicles and drivers, combining forward-facing, blind-spot, driver monitoring and other camera options.

Furthermore, the new camera offering includes a video library and playback capabilities, which simplify the process of reviewing footage for fleet operators.

Instead of reviewing each vehicle individually, fleet managers can now view footage from the entire fleet in one centralised dashboard, making it much simpler to search and retrieve content.

The dashboard contains a map function which displays the event type, duration and location associated with particular footage with the ability to download footage quickly and easily. The solution is built to simplify the most complex fleet management scenarios in compliance-heavy industries.

“As Australia works towards its goal of zero deaths and injuries on our roads by 2050, initiatives to combat driver distraction are being embraced far and wide,” said Luke Olsen, Managing Director, APAC at Microlise

“Our enhanced AI distraction cameras enable fleet managers to improve safety, reduce risk and lower insurance costs by proactively managing driver behaviour, establishing liability quickly and supporting compliance with industry standards, all from one platform.” he said.

Bill Wang, CEO at Streamax says Streamax thrives on working hand in hand with our customers, placing their success at the heart of our value.

“Partnering with Microlise allows us to turn AI-driven insights into tangible road safety outcomes, ensuring every journey is safer and more efficient for the world’s most demanding transport operations,” said Wang

Research has shown that an undistracted driver typically reacts to a hazard in 1 second, compared with a distracted driver who is significantly slower.

For example, drivers using a handheld phone are 48% slower, while those using a hands-free phone are 27% slower. Microlise’s next-generation AI distraction camera systems are designed to spot these behaviours before they cause a costly incident.

With drivers found to be solely at fault in only around 25% of collisions, the system also helps provide valuable context and evidence to support drivers following incidents.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is placing greater scrutiny on heavy vehicle safety with the transition from HVNL to the HVA expanding safety accountability across the entire transport supply chain.

Fleet managers are now expected to prove their safety systems are working in practice, not just documented on paper. AI-powered distraction cameras help give fleet managers the evidence they need to demonstrate they’re actively managing the risks of driver fatigue and distraction.

Beyond camera systems, Microlise offers the full suite of safety and compliance solutions including electronic work diary and fatigue compliance, tracking, driver safety and performance, pre-start and fit-to-drive checks, and fleet safety management solutions.
