The harsh truth? The SEO industry is broken. Too many so-called “experts” are making a fortune selling services they don’t understand, hiding behind flashy websites and misleading guarantees.

So, what does real SEO look like? In this guide, I will strip away the fluff and lay out exactly what an effective SEO strategy should involve.

1. Setting Up Google Search Console and Google Analytics

Before anything else, an SEO provider should ensure that Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Analytics (GA4) are properly set up. Without these tools, you have no way to measure SEO success.

Why It Matters:

  • Google Search Console helps you track your site’s indexing, search performance, and crawl issues.

  • Google Analytics provides insights into visitor behavior, traffic sources, and engagement metrics.

  • Both tools help identify technical SEO issues, keyword performance, and user behavior patterns.

If an SEO provider isn’t starting with proper tracking, they’re flying blind—and so are you.


2. Ensuring a Functional XML Sitemap and Robots.txt File

A functional XML sitemap helps Google understand your site’s structure, ensuring that all important pages are crawled and indexed. Meanwhile, a properly configured robots.txt file ensures that search engines aren’t wasting time on irrelevant pages.

The SEO industry is plagued by agencies that overcharge for “audits” and retainers while doing the bare minimum. If your provider isn’t actively implementing the above steps, they are likely wasting your time and money.

Real SEO is straightforward: – Here is what you should be paying for (Only)

✅ Technical SEO Fixes (When Necessary)

Some SEO problems do require expertise—fixing site speed, ensuring proper indexing, and dealing with complex issues like duplicate content or broken schema markup. But beware: not all technical SEO work is complex, and many fixes can be done easily.

✅ Competitor and Market Analysis

Understanding what your competitors are doing and adjusting your strategy accordingly is valuable. If your agency is running deep competitor analysis and using it to refine your SEO, that’s a service worth paying for.

The Outright Scam Artists

Here’s the thing: SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is critical for businesses, right? The whole concept of improving a website’s ranking on search engines like Google is brilliant.

The problem, though, while many of the aspects of SEO is super easy to do and should be provided as a baseline by any agency when it comes to the basics, it’s also constantly changing.

And, let’s be real, it’s little bit of a black box for most people. And guess who loves to swoop in on that? The scam artists!

First, there are those “guaranteed top rankings” guys. They promise you the moon—”We’ll get your site to #1 on Google!” But what they don’t tell you is that those rankings are often achieved by shady tactics that violate Google’s guidelines.

So sure, you might hit #1 for a few days or weeks, but Google catches wind of it, slaps you with a penalty, and then poof—you’re buried so deep in the search results, you might as well be invisible. They don’t care. They already got their fat paycheck from you.

Then there’s the “we use fancy jargon” crew. These are the people who throw around terms like “backlinks,” “long-tail keywords,” “meta tags,” and “algorithms” in an effort to make you feel like you don’t understand SEO, so you just throw your hands up and say, “Fine, take my money and do your magic.”

But in reality, these folks are just using the buzzwords to distract you from the fact that they’re doing the bare minimum—or worse, using outdated strategies that haven’t worked in years. You’re paying for something that might sound sophisticated but is actually garbage.

And let’s not forget and come back to the “SEO audits” that are actually just a 2-page PDF full of fluff and generic advice that could apply to anyone.

You know, like “You should improve your page load speed,” or “Use better keywords.” Yeah, no kidding! It’s the kind of thing any website owner could figure out with a little Googling and a couple of YouTube videos.

But of course, they charge you hundreds or thousands of dollars for this so-called “expert” analysis. Many website owners don’t even know there are free tools that get the job done. The worst part. The audits you pay for don’t even include pointing out some of the major problems.

The worst part? SEO is always changing. Google is constantly updating its algorithm, which means that yesterday’s tricks might not work today.

Yet these so-called “experts” act like they’ve got the secret sauce and are still selling outdated strategies, knowing full well that their clients will just keep throwing money at them, hoping for results.

Let’s talk about the “link-building” scams too. Some companies sell these so-called “high-quality backlinks” like they’re magic tickets to ranking success.

But more often than not, they’re either using low-quality, spammy links or paying for links that are coming from questionable sources. In the end, these links can hurt your site’s credibility and cause you to get hit by a Google penalty.

Local SEO services. Oh, this one’s a treat. They love to sell you “local listings” on directories, which might sound good on paper, but 99% of these directories are useless and irrelevant.

It’s a complete scam that preys on businesses trying to rank in local searches. They charge you month after month for listings that don’t do jack.

At the end of the day, there’s a massive problem in the SEO industry: a lack of transparency. The best, most honest SEO professionals are rare and hard to find because the industry is full of people who are more interested in making a quick buck than actually helping businesses grow sustainably.

And they get away with it because so many people don’t fully understand SEO, which makes them easy targets. It’s a vicious cycle, and the good guys get drowned out by the noise of all the snake oil salesmen.

I mean, talk about the ultimate irony. It’s like a chef who can’t cook trying to sell you cooking lessons. What are we even doing here? It’s straight-up comedy at this point.

Picture this: You’re running an SEO agency, right? You’ve got a website, a fancy logo, all that jazz, but for some reason, you can’t even rank your own site in a good position on Google.

You can’t generate any organic leads. You’re basically invisible in the search results, but—plot twist!—you’re somehow out here offering your “expert” SEO services to other businesses.

There’s ads running on Facebook and youtube saying, “Hey, if you’re struggling to get SEO clients, we’ve got the perfect solution for you! We can help you get more leads and skyrocket your business!”

The irony is just chef’s kiss. Like, seriously? If you can’t even market your own SEO agency and land clients without paying for them via some lead gen service or relying on other gimmicks, what credibility do you have to help someone else do it?

And these ads are everywhere—Facebook, YouTube, Google Ads—where they’re all like, “We help agencies get clients! Why? Because there is demand for these services. It’s the very same people who know nothing about SEO and just reselling it who are clicking the ads and buying into them.

These companies are often pushing some “premium” system or funnel, claiming it’s the magic solution to get clients, when in reality, it’s just another way to make them money off other agencies who are already struggling with their own SEO and marketing problems.

Honestly, it’s just one big laugh. If you’re an SEO agency that can’t even rank your own website or get inquiries without relying on ads or cold outreach, why are you out here pitching SEO to other businesses? It’s like asking a broke financial advisor to teach you how to manage your money.

So, here we are in 2025: SEO agencies are marketing themselves by selling how to get clients for other agencies. It’s a never-ending loop of “SEO services for SEO services”—it’s like an infinite mirror of digital marketing absurdity. And honestly, I can’t stop laughing.

Never Pay for a Report That Just Leads to More Billing

One of the biggest scams in SEO? Paying an agency—sometimes even a big-name brand—hundreds of dollars just to send you a report.

Not only does this report tell you what’s “wrong,” but it also conveniently leads you down a rabbit hole of things they can charge you to fix—most of which require zero real effort.

Here’s the truth: If an SEO agency really knew what they were doing, they wouldn’t be milking you with pointless reports.

They’d be securing backlinks, optimising content, and making actual changes. But that can be hard and time expensive work, and most of these agencies wouldn’t have a clue where to start.

By focusing on real, impactful SEO practices rather than overpriced audits and fluff reports, businesses can achieve sustainable growth and long-term search engine success. Don’t fall for the SEO retainer or audit scams and demand results, not excuses.

SEO agencies should be accountable for real results, not just itemizing easy tasks and inflating their invoices. Before you sign off on any SEO service, ask yourself: Is this something that actually helps my rankings? If the answer is no, you’re being taken for a ride.

Your money should go toward actions that improve your digital presence, not towards busywork disguised as SEO expertise. Keep agencies honest and pay for performance—not for pointless checklists.
