What Was the First Passenger Aircraft to Go Supersonic?

Most people think the first passenger aircraft to break the sound barrier was the Concorde or the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144. In reality, it was the Douglas DC-8, which exceeded Mach 1 during a test flight on August 21, 1961 — nearly eight years before Concorde or the Tu-144 flew supersonically.

Most people assume the first passenger aircraft to break the sound barrier was the famous Concorde or the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144. Surprisingly, neither aircraft holds that distinction.

The first airliner ever to exceed the speed of sound was actually the Douglas DC-8 — a conventional subsonic passenger jet built by Douglas Aircraft Company.

On August 21, 1961, a specially prepared DC-8 became the first commercial jet airliner in history to fly faster than Mach 1, achieving supersonic speed nearly eight years before Concorde or the Tu-144 entered the headlines.


The First Airliner to Break the Sound Barrier: Douglas DC-8

The aircraft involved was a Douglas DC-8-43 with the registration N9604Z, destined for Canadian Pacific Air Lines. The historic test flight took place over Edwards Air Force Base in California during a series of aerodynamic and stability evaluations.

The crew included:

  • Captain William Magruder (test pilot)
  • Paul Patten (copilot)
  • Joseph Tomich (flight engineer)
  • Richard H. Edwards (flight test engineer)

During the flight, the aircraft was deliberately placed into a steep dive from high altitude in order to accelerate beyond the speed of sound.

The DC-8 reached approximately Mach 1.012 at around 41,000 feet, officially becoming the first jet airliner to exceed supersonic speed.

This achievement remains one of the lesser-known milestones in aviation history.


How the DC-8 Went Supersonic

Unlike aircraft designed specifically for supersonic travel, the DC-8 was never intended to sustain speeds beyond Mach 1. It was a standard commercial jetliner designed for subsonic cruising.

To break the sound barrier, the test pilots relied on gravity and aerodynamic conditions rather than engine thrust alone.

The process involved:

  1. Climbing the aircraft to high altitude
  2. Entering a steep dive
  3. Allowing the aircraft to accelerate naturally past Mach 1

However, the maneuver became extremely dangerous once the aircraft crossed the sound barrier.

As shockwaves formed over the wings and control surfaces, the pilots temporarily lost effective elevator control. The aircraft initially refused to pull out of the dive.

The crew attempted to use the horizontal stabiliser manually, but the aerodynamic forces at supersonic speed made recovery difficult.

Only after steepening the dive further and descending below approximately 35,000 feet were the pilots finally able to regain enough control authority to level the aircraft safely.

The flight demonstrated both the strength of the DC-8 airframe and the dangers of transonic flight in aircraft never intended for supersonic operation.


Why the DC-8 Was NOT a True Supersonic Passenger Aircraft

This is where an important distinction must be made.

The Douglas DC-8 was:

  • The first commercial airliner to exceed Mach 1
  • A conventional passenger jet
  • Only briefly supersonic during a controlled test dive
  • Never designed for sustained supersonic flight

The aircraft remained a fully subsonic airliner throughout its operational career.

It could not cruise at supersonic speed, nor was it intended to carry passengers faster than the speed of sound during regular airline service.


The First Passenger Aircraft Specifically Designed for Supersonic Travel

The first passenger aircraft purpose-built for routine supersonic transport was the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144.

Unlike the DC-8, the Tu-144 was engineered from the ground up to operate above Mach 1 for extended periods while carrying passengers.

Key milestones for the Tu-144 include:

  • First Flight: December 31, 1968
  • First Supersonic Flight: June 5, 1969
  • Passenger Service Began: November 1977
  • Cruise Speed: Around Mach 2

The Tu-144 actually beat Concorde into the air and became the world’s first supersonic transport aircraft (SST) to exceed the speed of sound.

However, despite its technological achievement, the aircraft suffered from reliability problems, high operating costs, and poor passenger confidence.

Its reputation was severely damaged after the catastrophic crash at the 1973 Paris Air Show.

Passenger service lasted only a few months before the aircraft was permanently withdrawn from commercial passenger operations in 1978.


Concorde: The Most Successful Supersonic Airliner

While the Tu-144 was technically first, the Concorde became the most iconic and commercially successful supersonic passenger aircraft ever built.

Developed jointly by Britain and France, Concorde combined cutting-edge aerodynamics with luxury air travel.

With its slender fuselage, delta wings, and droop nose, Concorde became one of the most recognizable aircraft in aviation history.

Unlike the DC-8 test flight, Concorde could sustain supersonic speeds throughout most of its journey.

Passengers travelling aboard Concorde routinely flew faster than the Earth’s rotational speed and could watch the curvature of the planet from 60,000 feet.


Why Supersonic Passenger Travel Disappeared

Despite their engineering brilliance, both Concorde and the Tu-144 faced major challenges:

  • Extremely high fuel consumption
  • Expensive maintenance
  • Sonic boom restrictions over land
  • Limited passenger capacity
  • High operating costs

Concorde’s future was further damaged by the tragic Air France Flight 4590 crash in Paris in 2000.

Combined with declining profitability after the September 11 attacks, both Air France and British Airways retired Concorde in 2003.

Since then, no commercial supersonic passenger aircraft has returned to regular airline service — although several aerospace companies are currently developing next-generation supersonic jets.
