Over 300 UNSW academics working in artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning will be supported by a new university-wide research institute.

The launch is being held at Leighton Hall, John Niland Scientia Building, UNSW Sydney, Kensington campus.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Attila Brungs says researchers and students will have the opportunity to collaborate and create in a creative and fruitful environment at the Institute.

“It will play its part in explaining to the broader community how AI can be of benefit to society, but also encourage debate about its use and limitations, including appropriate regulation.” says Brungs

According to UNSW prominent AI academics and leading AI industry experts will attend the launch, including:

  • Stela Solar, Director of the National AI Centre at CSIRO’s Data61
  • Professor Peter Bartlett, Head of Research at Google Australia
  • Professor Toby Walsh, Chief Scientist at the UNSW AI Institute
  • Dr Ian Oppermann, Chief Data Scientist at the NSW Department of Customer Service.

Associate Professor Haris Aziz, interim director of the UNSW AI Institute says, AI is becoming better than humans at performing many crucial functions

“The UNSW AI Institute is a place to connect UNSW AI scholars with each other and the world.”

“We want to take advantage of our world-class researchers working on fundamental AI problems or applying AI techniques to their respective domains to establish the institute.”

According to Aziz the main purpose for doing so was to make it easier for the world to engage with us and it’s crucial to realise the potential and regulate its use

“Given the importance of AI in the future, we have a team of world-class researchers working on fundamental AI problems or applying AI techniques to their respective domains.” says Aziz

AI has invaded every realm, and its influence is extensive, ranging from finance to education, social media, e-commerce, agriculture, entertainment, space research, and security, as well as many others.

Health care is a excellent place to see how AI is making a significant impact.

“Our researchers are well-positioned to make a significant impact on the AI-med interface,” said A/Prof. Aziz, referring to the $28.9 billion in private artificial intelligence investment in health & medicine over the last five years.
