Proton Mail, one of the most popular secure email platforms, has been facing a significant outage affecting users across the globe for several hours, leaving many unable to access their email accounts through both webmail and mobile or desktop applications.

The disruption, which began earlier today, has left many ProtonMail users frustrated, as they find themselves locked out of their inboxes.

As of 3:40 AM DST – Australian Daylight Saving Time , Downdetector reported over 1,600 user complaints, signalling widespread issues with ProtonMail.

Interestingly, while ProtonMail’s email service has been down, some users have reported that they are still able to access the platform’s other services, including Proton Calendar and Proton Drive.

Additionally, Proton VPN appears to be functioning normally, providing a degree of relief to those relying on the platform for secure browsing.

Despite this, many users are left in the dark, unable to check, send, or receive important emails, and are awaiting updates from the company’s support channels.

ProtonMail has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the issue. However, users are hoping for a swift resolution.

The service has a reputation for being highly reliable, particularly for privacy-conscious individuals and businesses, which has made this downtime particularly concerning.

While the reasons for the outage remain unclear, ProtonMail has acknowledged the issue on its status page, and teams are reportedly working to resolve the disruptions.

It is unclear how long the service will remain down, but users are advised to check for updates directly from ProtonMail’s official social media and support channels. However, initial chatter suggests their may be an internal network issue.

ProtonMail is known for its focus on security and privacy, offering end-to-end encryption for email communications. This issue has sparked concerns about reliability and service consistency, especially among those who rely on ProtonMail for secure, encrypted communications.

For now, users can continue to access their calendars and files on Proton Drive, and Proton VPN remains operational for those in need of secure internet connections.

ProtonMail addressed the issue in a statement on Downdetector, saying: “We are continuing to investigate this issue.”

The company provided the update on January 9 at 16:27 CET, noting that they were experiencing “intermittent network issues affecting some of its users,” and assured customers that they were working to restore services “as soon as possible.”

Email services have now been down for approximately 2 hours. The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused.
