Australian customers considering a Contabo VPS in Singapore may want to look beyond the advertised CPU, RAM and SSD storage specifications before upgrading, because the network route between Australia and the server can have a much bigger effect on real-world performance than the hardware itself.
In testing from Melbourne to Contabo’s Singapore infrastructure, latency reached as high as 272 milliseconds.
That is very slow for a connection between Melbourne and Singapore, where a reasonably well-routed connection would generally be expected to sit somewhere around 83 to 110 milliseconds, although the exact result will always depend on the customer’s ISP, upstream carrier and the route being used.
That distinction is important because Contabo doesn’t control every single part of the path between a customer and its server.
Your own ISP can also have a major influence on latency, particularly if it uses an upstream carrier with weak peering into Asia or sends traffic through a longer international path than necessary.
Two customers in Melbourne can therefore ping the same Contabo Singapore server and receive very different results.
One ISP might hand traffic into a carrier with a relatively direct route into Singapore, while another may move the same traffic through several international networks before it reaches Contabo’s infrastructure.
Even with that qualification, global network routing is still an important part of what customers are paying a VPS provider for.
Testing an OVHcloud IP in Singapore produced a much better result, with latency coming back at around 132 ms from Melbourne.
The tests were conducted over an Australian ISP using the Vocus network, so routing and upstream carrier arrangements may still have influenced the result.
A hosting company can offer plenty of CPU power, fast storage and large amounts of memory, but if its upstream connectivity or peering arrangements produce poor routes from major markets, much of that performance advantage disappears by the time the traffic reaches the customer.
This is where Contabo’s Singapore VPS became disappointing in my testing.
Seeing latency climb toward 272 milliseconds from Melbourne makes little sense for someone choosing Singapore specifically because of its relative proximity to Australia, particularly when other Singapore hosts can often be reached far more quickly from the same region.
A server being physically located in Singapore does not automatically mean traffic from Australia will take a direct path there.
Internet routing is controlled through BGP, peering agreements and upstream transit providers, and traffic can sometimes be sent through distant international hubs before eventually arriving at the destination.
That’s one of the reasons a VPS can have excellent hardware and still feel slow.
If the route is poor, every request between the visitor and server has to travel that inefficient path, and the delay becomes especially obvious with websites, APIs, remote administration and other applications where many small requests are being made.
Packet loss makes the problem worse. High latency is frustrating on its own, but dropped packets can force data to be retransmitted, increasing delays and making connections feel inconsistent even when the VPS itself is barely under load.
For WordPress and other dynamic websites, this matters more than many hosting buyers realise.
The server may generate a page quickly, but if the connection between the VPS and the visitor is suffering from high latency or packet loss, that fast server-side response can still turn into a noticeably slower experience in the browser.
Contabo’s lower-tier VPS plans also raise another performance concern because they do not all start with a 1 Gbps network port.
Some entry-level plans begin at 200 Mbps, which feels difficult to reconcile with the idea of upgrading to a VPS primarily for better performance and greater server resources.
For many small websites, 200 Mbps may technically be enough, but that misses the point of raw VPS performance
Customers moving from shared hosting to a VPS are usually paying for more control, more processing power and better overall performance, so limiting the network connection while also delivering poor latency makes the upgrade considerably less attractive.
There is little benefit in paying for more CPU cores and faster storage if the network remains the bottleneck. A faster processor will not turn a 272 ms round trip into 90 ms, and additional RAM will not correct an inefficient route between Australia and Singapore.
This is also why comparing VPS providers purely by their advertised server specifications can be misleading.
A provider with slightly less impressive hardware but much stronger peering and international connectivity can easily deliver a faster and more responsive experience than a higher-specification Contabo VPS reached through a poor network path.
It is also fair to say that one bad ping test does not prove an entire network is poor. Submarine cable issues, temporary congestion, routing changes and problems with a customer’s own ISP can all affect latency, sometimes dramatically, and internet routes can change from one day to the next.
However, when high latency appears repeatedly, packet loss is visible and other Singapore servers perform significantly better from the same Australian connection, the provider’s network and upstream routing deserve closer scrutiny. At that point, it becomes harder to put the entire problem down to the customer’s ISP.
Anyone in Australia considering a Contabo Singapore VPS should test the network before committing to a more expensive server.
A test IP, ping test and traceroute can tell you far more about the likely real-world experience than another two CPU cores or a larger RAM allocation shown on the pricing page.
It is also worth testing from more than one Australian ISP if possible.
If one network reaches Contabo Singapore at around 90 ms and another takes more than 200 ms, the problem may be specific to the peering relationship between those networks, but if several Australian connections produce poor results, the concern becomes much harder to ignore.
For me, the combination of latency reaching around 272 milliseconds, observable packet loss and lower-tier Contabo VPS plans starting with only a 200 Mbps network port makes the Singapore offering very difficult to recommend for anyone buying it specifically for performance from Australia.
A VPS should deliver more than impressive-looking hardware specifications. If the global routing behind it is poor, a customer can end up paying for a powerful server that still feels slower in everyday use than a well-connected shared hosting account with a better network.
For Australian customers, particularly those in Melbourne, I would test Contabo’s Singapore network very carefully before upgrading.
Based on the performance I observed, I would be looking at other VPS providers with stronger Asia-Pacific routing, better peering into Australia and at least a 1 Gbps shared or dedicated port as standard.
