Yellowbox Crowned as ‘Hall of Fame Startup’ at UNSW Founders Gala Night

Yellowbox, a pioneering smart locker system startup, has been honoured with the ‘Hall of Fame Startup Award’ (formerly known as the ‘Startup of the Year’) at the recent UNSW Founders Gala Night. This accolade from one of Australia’s leading entrepreneurial universities highlights Yellowbox’s impressive growth on a global scale.

Founded in 2018 by four ambitious UNSW alumni, HoJun Tang, Vanessa Zhao, Adrian Brossard and Ben Delaney, Yellowbox has revolutionised workplace locker management with its smart locker system.

Leveraging IoT technology, the company has successfully deployed its locker locks and software in Fortune 500 companies’ workplaces, including giants like Nike, Canon and Zurich. This innovation allows seamless booking and access to workplace lockers through existing building swipe cards, touchscreen, and mobile phone.

Yellowbox’s impact has extended beyond Australia, with its presence now spanning across 10 countries across four continents, including six new expansions this year alone.

Their technology has millions of uses, demonstrating not only its ease of use, but how the product addresses the needs of the hybrid working hot desking environment, where workplaces need to provide employees with lockers to store their items they would have once stored in the cabinets under their permanent desk.

HoJun Tang, co-founder, notes, “The ROI also comes from removing labor-intensive tasks related to managing traditional lockers, such as handing keys, tracking users on spreadsheets, assisting with forgotten codes and replacing locks with lost keys.”

“By automating locker and user management processes and providing a seamless self-serve booking process, Yellowbox’s system saves the equivalent of one full-time employee per 500 lockers when compared to traditional key lockers,”

Interestingly, Yellowbox’s journey stands out in the current startup ecosystem, characterised by aggressive fundraising and high capital influx. Unlike many startups that seek large funding rounds to fuel growth, Yellowbox has carved a unique path.

Initially kickstarted with support from accelerator programs such as UNSW Founders 10x and Techstars, the company quickly achieved profitability and sustainable growth without the need for substantial external funding – a strategy that has proven especially prudent in today’s economic environment.

“Being honoured at the UNSW Founders Gala Night is not just a reflection of our team’s work but a shining example of the dynamic and supportive startup environment fostered by UNSW,”

“We’re privileged to become a leader in workplace technology, and we’re excited to keep redefining the traditional workspace with our smart locker system.’ says HoJun.
