WebCentral.Au Customers Paying 67% More For Identical Overpriced VPS Service

Australian web hosting customers are being charged vastly different prices for exactly the same VPS hosting servers and plans, depending on which brand they choose, an examination of pricing structures has revealed.

WebCentral, an Australian web hosting and VPS hosting provider, is charging customers A$249.93 per month for its Managed VPS 2 plan.

Meanwhile, Hosting.com offers an identical service (VPS2) running on exactly the same servers under the same pricing plans for just A$149 per month ($91.99USD)—a difference of approximately 67%

The discovery raises questions about pricing transparency in the web hosting industry, particularly given that both WebCentral and Hosting.com operate under the same corporate umbrella: World Host Group.

Same Infrastructure, Dramatically Different Price Tags

According to the pricing comparison, both providers deliver their VPS services from identical server infrastructure. (The same servers)

The hardware specifications, network connectivity, and underlying technology remain the same regardless of which brand customers choose. The only substantive difference appears to be the logo on the invoice.

For Australian businesses and website owners shopping for virtual private server solutions, this pricing disparity represents a significant annual cost difference of over $1,200—money that could otherwise be allocated to business development, marketing, or other operational needs.

The World Host Group Connection

Both hosting brands fall under World Host Group’s portfolio of companies. While it’s not uncommon for corporate groups to maintain multiple brands targeting different market segments, the extent of the price difference for functionally identical services has surprised industry observers.

The practice of brand-based pricing differentiation exists across many industries, but the web hosting sector’s technical nature means customers often assume they’re paying for specific infrastructure and performance characteristics rather than brand positioning alone.

What This Means for Customers

For current WebCentral VPS 2 customers, the revelation suggests they may be significantly overpaying for their hosting service. Those locked into annual contracts could be facing hundreds of dollars in excess charges compared to what they might pay by switching to Hosting.com’s equivalent offering.

Prospective customers researching Australian hosting and VPS options now face an additional layer of complexity: determining whether premium pricing reflects genuine service differentiation or simply brand markup on identical infrastructure.

Neither WebCentral nor Hosting.com had provided comment at the time of publication regarding the pricing structure or whether any service differentiators justify the substantial cost gap between the two offerings.
