The Internet’s SSL Security Layer Is Heading Into a Major Cryptographic Shift

OpenSSL Conference 2026 will bring global security experts to Prague as the internet moves toward a major cryptographic shift in SSL security. Tim Hudson, President of OpenSSL Corporation, said the technologies securing the internet are “largely invisible” despite supporting billions of online interactions daily.

Every day, billions of secure online interactions take place without most people ever thinking about the technology that makes them possible.

From online banking and healthcare systems to cloud services and government platforms, trusted digital communications rely on cryptographic infrastructure working quietly behind the scenes.

One of the technologies helping to protect those connections is the OpenSSL Library, one of the world’s most widely deployed open source cryptographic libraries.

OpenSSL is a global collaborative open source project that develops and maintains the OpenSSL Library, one of the world’s most widely used cryptographic libraries.

Used across operating systems, cloud platforms, enterprise software and connected devices, the OpenSSL Library helps protect billions of secure online interactions every day.

Through the OpenSSL Foundation and OpenSSL Corporation, the project is committed to advancing trusted cryptography, supporting sustainable open source development and strengthening the security of the internet.

This October, the global OpenSSL community will come together in Prague for the OpenSSL Conference 2026, taking place from 13 to 15 October.

The conference comes as organisations face growing pressure to prepare for major changes in cybersecurity, with post-quantum cryptography, software supply chain security, digital trust, regulation and the future of critical open source infrastructure all set to be examined.

It’s also designed to encourage discussion between technical experts and decision-makers, recognising that securing the internet requires collaboration across industry, government and academia.

Tim Hudson, President of OpenSSL Corporation, says the technologies that secure the internet are largely invisible, yet they support billions of online interactions every day.

“The OpenSSL Conference is an opportunity to bring together the people who develop, maintain and depend on this critical infrastructure.” said Hudson,

“By sharing knowledge and experiences, we can strengthen the collaboration that has always been central to improving internet security.” he said.

The security layer protecting websites, online banking and cloud services is already being rebuilt for a post-quantum future.

Google said in March 2026 it wants its systems migrated to post-quantum cryptography by 2029, while NIST is now urging organisations to begin moving away from encryption that could eventually be broken by sufficiently powerful quantum computers.

The Change Is Already Reaching HTTPS.

Chromium published a 2026 roadmap for post-quantum website authentication, while recent research found about 49% of tested domains supported hybrid post-quantum key exchange, although certificate infrastructure remains much further behind.

OpenSSL has already started that transition, with post-quantum algorithms now built into newer releases and hybrid quantum-resistant key exchange becoming part of default TLS behaviour.

That means the cryptographic foundations sitting underneath much of the web are no longer simply preparing for change, they are already moving through it.

The conference will feature high-profile keynote presentations, technical sessions, panel discussions and networking opportunities, providing attendees with insights into the latest developments in cryptography and open source security.

Sessions will explore how organisations can prepare for emerging threats while ensuring trusted cryptography continues to support the digital services that people and businesses rely on every day.

OpenSSL Conference has become a key event for the global cybersecurity and open source communities, creating a forum where contributors, users and industry leaders can exchange ideas, share expertise and help shape the future direction of secure communications.
