When Aussies were asked what was most important for a happy and contented home, more than half (54%) chose having access to high-speed internet over tidying up their house and nearly two-thirds (63%) would rather have high-speed internet than doing their weekly laundry.

In today’s fast-paced digital age, access to high-speed internet has become an essential requirement for most Australians. With the rise of online learning, remote work, and digital entertainment, a reliable and speedy internet connection is a necessity for many households.

This shift has led to a change in priorities for many people, with many Australians now valuing high-speed internet over maintaining a clean and tidy house.

The shift in priorities is not surprising given the increased reliance on digital technologies in all aspects of modern life. With more people working remotely, attending virtual meetings, and accessing online resources, a reliable and speedy internet connection has become an absolute necessity.

Additionally, streaming services like Netflix and Stan have become more popular, with Australians spending an average of 15.4 hours a week streaming and watching online content. This has made high-speed internet a top priority for many households.

While this shift in priorities may seem alarming to some, it is important to remember that it is a reflection of the changing times. For many Australians, access to high-speed internet is crucial to their daily lives and livelihoods.

With the launch of Optus’ latest Living Network innovations, Internet Boost and Mobile Boost, Optus giving customers exactly what they want: more control on how their internet speed or mobile data connection works for them, and more control of their experience in the moments that matter.

Matt Williams, Optus Managing Director Marketing and Revenue, said “At Optus, we understand that high-speed internet is incredibly valuable to Australians and we’re delighted to offer an affordable way for customers to boost their internet speed whether it be for extra house guests on multiple devices or gearing up for a day of online gaming.

“With a third of Aussies using their mobile and internet data for streaming movies*, Optus Boost products are innovations that are giving Aussies customised on-demand options that suit their lifestyle and budget,” said Williams

“For instance, to access the Internet Boost product, eligible Optus customers just need to head to the Speed tab of the My Optus app and click “Boost for 24 hours” to get the maximum speed available on your home nbn at your premises – giving our customers even faster speed when they need it,” he said

How many Australians have access to internet?

Analysis indicates that internet users in Australia increased by 777 thousand (+3.4 percent) between 2021 and 2022.

For perspective, these user figures reveal that 2.33 million people in Australia did not use the internet at the start of 2022, meaning that 9.0 percent of the population remained offline at the beginning of the year.

Access to high-speed internet has become a top priority for many Australians, with more people valuing it over maintaining a clean and tidy home.

This shift in priorities is a reflection of the changing times, with more people relying on digital technologies for work, entertainment, and social connections

Generation Z

It’s said that members of Generation Z are being careless with money, but when it comes to streaming services, they are quite frugal. Approximately 76% of them don’t pay for streaming services, while the opposite is true for baby boomers, as 17% of them pay for their own streaming services.

The Optus Living Network, launched in May 2021, is a collection of on-demand innovative network features designed to empower Optus customers to transform their daily connected experience simply within the My Optus App, all powered by Optus’ world-class network.
