SA Power Networks Opens Cyber Security Career Pathway For IT Newcomers

SA Power Networks has officially launched its inaugural ‘Kickstart’ program, designed to equip individuals with no prior experience in IT or cybersecurity with the foundational skills needed to enter the rapidly growing cyber sector. Over a two-year period, participants will gain real-world experience.

Delivered in collaboration with the Australian Computer Society, the program offers a structured pathway into the cybersecurity industry for school leavers, career changers, and others with limited or no technology background.

According to Head of Cyber Security and IT Resilience Nathan Morelli the initiative will help bridge the talent gap in South Australia by cultivating a new generation of skilled cyber security professionals and helping people take their first steps into the industry.

“The goal is to give them the skills, experience and confidence to become highly sought-after cyber security professionals by the end of the program, which benefits the whole industry,” said Morelli

“We’re proud to offer this opportunity, which we believe is one of the first of its kind in Australia, and we hope it inspires not only more people to move into cyber, but also other organisations to create programs like this.” he said.

Program Offers Hands-On Experience, Certification, and Career Development

The first intake of the Kickstart program will include up to four positions, with two participants starting in July and another two scheduled to begin in January.

Over a two-year period, participants will gain real-world experience by working three days a week alongside SA Power Networks’ experienced Cyber Security team.

The remaining two days will be dedicated to structured training delivered by the Australian Computer Society, covering essential topics such as IT fundamentals, cybersecurity principles, and advanced security technologies.

Participants will also earn industry-recognised certifications, receive one-on-one mentorship, and have access to networking opportunities within the organisation’s award-winning cybersecurity team.

The program concludes with a personalised development pathway designed to support long-term career success in the cybersecurity field.
