Federal government launches a new National Artificial Intelligence Centre as part of its AI Action Plan.
The $54 million National AI Centre will operate within CSIRO’s data and digital specialist arm Data61 and will be led by Microsoft’s Stela Solar.
The Centre will bring together partners from government, industry and the research sector to accelerate the learning and adoption of AI technologies in Australia.
The Centre is part of the government’s $124.1 million investment under its AI Action Plan, which sets out a vision for Australia to become a global leader in the development and adoption of a reliable, secure and responsible artificial intelligence..
CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said as Director of the National AI Centre Ms Solar would work with CISRO to bridge the gap between industry and Australian AI specialists.
“I’m really excited to say that an exceptionally talented Australian, Stela Solar, will leave the US and come back home to lead our new National AI Centre,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Science and Technology minister Melissa Price said the centre will help business access AI expertise and capabilities.
“The launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Centre positions Australia as a global leader in AI technology, harnessing our collective capabilities, talent and resources to be developers and drive early adoption of AI by our businesses,” she said in a statement.
“The National Artificial Intelligence Centre will also help address barriers that small and medium enterprises face in developing AI and other emerging technologies by connecting business with the talent, knowledge and tools to succeed.”
The Centre is seeking Australian and global foundation partners for investment and collaboration, with National AI Centre events scheduled for early 2022.
AI technologies are expected to contribute more than $20 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Ms. Solar previously worked with Microsoft as Global Director – Sales and Strategy for Artificial Intelligence Solutions.
The National Artificial Intelligence Centre will also help address barriers that small and medium enterprises face in developing AI and other emerging technologies by connecting business with the talent, knowledge and tools to succeed.
