Recent research commissioned by Cohesity and conducted by Censuswide unveils a harrowing reality for Australian companies: they are still under siege by cyber adversaries, with ransomware emerging as a relentless assailant.

According to the findings published in late January 2024, the study, based on insights from 300 IT and security operations executives, exposes a landscape fraught with vulnerabilities and escalating threats.

Ransomware, the scourge of modern digital existence, has struck nearly three-quarters (72%) of organisations surveyed between June and December, leaving a trail of disruption and despair in its wake.

The prognosis is grim, with an overwhelming 99% of respondents predicting a surge in cyberattacks throughout 2024. Alarmingly, 70% anticipate an increase of more than 50%, signaling an ominous escalation in the cyber arms race.

Compounding the crisis is the staggering pace at which data security risks are outpacing the growth of data management capabilities.

Despite efforts to fortify defenses, 88% of respondents lament that their data security vulnerabilities are burgeoning at an alarming rate.

Confidence in existing cyber resilience strategies is in short supply, with less than a quarter (24%) of organisations expressing full faith in their ability to withstand the onslaught of evolving threats.

Even policies mandating a stance of non-negotiation with cyber extortionists seems futile in the face of relentless attacks. Despite purported ‘do not pay’ directives, a staggering 81% of organisations admit to capitulating to ransom demands over the past two years.

The financial toll of such capitulation is staggering, with 92% of respondents indicating a willingness to pay exorbitant ransoms to retrieve critical data and restore business operations. For some, the cost of recovery exceeds US$5 million, underscoring the astronomical price of cyber resilience.

As Australian organisations grapple with the fallout of cyber onslaughts, the imperative for decisive action and strategic investment in cybersecurity resilience has never been clearer.
