Sydney’s next major metro line is moving closer to reality, and BAI Communications is set to play a pivotal role. The company has secured a key contract to deliver the radio communications backbone for the Sydney Metro West project, working alongside the newly appointed Metro Trains West (MTW) consortium.
MTW, a joint venture between MTR Corporation (Australia) and CRRC (Hong Kong), was awarded the state’s Trains, Systems, Maintenance and Operations (TSMO) contract in December.
Under the agreement, BAI will design, deploy, and integrate the critical communications infrastructure that will keep the metro line connected, safe, and reliable when it opens in 2032.
The scope of BAI’s work spans the full communications suite essential for modern metro operations, ensuring passengers, operators, and control systems remain seamlessly linked across the new corridor.
- Mission-critical train communication system: Delivering a Private 5G network enabling operational radio systems, train communications, and rail signalling.
- Public safety network connectivity: Ensuring NSW emergency services maintain reliable coverage throughout the entire corridor.
- Public mobile connectivity: Providing seamless 4G/5G coverage for Telstra, Optus, and TPG customers across all stations and tunnels.
- Integrated delivery: Managing the lifecycle elements from design and installation through to testing, commissioning, and operational readiness.
BAI Communications is breaking new ground with Australia’s first 5GMCX-based radio communications system, purpose-built to support the next generation of rail operations.
The cutting-edge technology lays the foundation for the Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS), the international standard that will replace aging GSM-R networks over the coming decade.
The Sydney Metro West project is set to transform travel between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, doubling rail capacity with 16 driverless metro trains running through 24 kilometres of tunnels and new stations.
Beyond faster journeys and reduced congestion, the project will drive urban renewal and reshape the transport landscape across Greater Sydney, making it one of Australia’s most ambitious public infrastructure initiatives.
BAI Communications brings a wealth of experience in mission-critical networks, having delivered large-scale infrastructure for national TV and radio broadcasts, public safety networks, and major rail systems around the world—from London and New York City to Hong Kong.
Drawing on international expertise, BAI is now bringing its proven capabilities to Sydney Metro West, ensuring the new line is underpinned by world-class communications systems.
Elyssa Rollinson, Chief Commercial Officer, BAI Communications, said, “BAI Communications is proud to be a part of this transformational project that will reshape mobility across Greater Sydney.
“Our expertise in managing critical, ‘always on’ communications networks positions us ideally to deliver the robust future-ready infrastructure required for a world-class metro system of this scale and sophistication. We are delighted to partner with MTW on this significant undertaking.”
“The communications systems we deliver will not only provide passengers with seamless mobile connectivity throughout their journey but will also underpin the advanced signalling and control systems that ensure safe, reliable metro operations,” said Rollinson.
“This project demonstrates BAI’s capability to deliver integrated communications solutions that address multiple connectivity needs simultaneously, achieving superior outcomes for government, communities and public safety agencies.” she said.
Anthony Warren, CEO Metro Trains West Pty Limited, said, “Sydney Metro West requires communications infrastructure that can support both mission-critical rail operations and the connectivity expectations of passengers today, and into the future.
“BAI Communications brings proven global expertise in delivering exactly these types of complex, integrated solutions. We’re pleased to have them as part of the team delivering this transformational project for Greater Sydney.” he said.
Work on tracks, power, ventilation and communications systems for the new line is expected to commence in 2026 following completion of the project’s tunnelling phase, with approximately 1,000 workers operating in the tunnels beneath the city.
The Sydney Metro West line will serve stations at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street, providing high-frequency services between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD
