402.74 Million Terrabytes of Data Is Created Every Day

How much data is created every day? 402.74 million terabytes of data is created every day in according to latest statistics. “Created” includes data that is newly generated, captured, copied, or consumed. In zettabytes, that equates to around 147 zettabytes per year, around 12 zettabytes per month, 2.8 zettabytes per week, or 0.4 zettabytes per day as of 2025

This immense flow of data is projected to reach even greater heights, with an estimated 147 zettabytes expected to be generated by the end of this year.

Looking ahead, annual data generation is projected to surge to an astonishing 181 zettabytes by 2025, fueled by the growing reliance on digital platforms, the rapid proliferation of smart devices, and the ongoing expansion of internet access around the world.

A significant portion of this data is attributable to video content, which now accounts for more than half of all internet data traffic.

From streaming services to social media platforms, videos have become a dominant medium for communication, entertainment, and information sharing, contributing heavily to the daily data deluge.

The United States plays a central role in this global data ecosystem, housing over 2,700 data centres.

The high tech and secure facilities are crucial for managing and processing the vast amounts of information generated every second, providing the backbone for everything from cloud storage to complex computational tasks.

Analysing Global Data Creation: Key Insights

With approximately 5.35 billion internet users worldwide, the potential for daily data generation is staggering, with each person producing around 15.87 TB of data on average.

Daily Data Creation by Platform:

  • Facebook leads the pack, generating about 4,000 TB of data each day, making it the most visited site in 2023.

  • X (Twitter) accounts for around 500 million tweets daily, translating to roughly 560 GB of data.

  • TikTok users produce about 7.35 TB of data daily through video content.

  • YouTube hosts an impressive 720,000 hours of video each day, amounting to around 4.3 PB of data.

  • Google processes about 3.5 billion searches daily, which results in 20 PB of data.

Daily Data Creation by User:

In 2023, the average internet user generated approximately 1.7 MB of data per second, totalling around 146,880 MB per day. For an average household of four, this equates to approximately 506,736 MB of data generated daily.

Future Projections and Trends:

As we delve deeper into data creation, these figures highlight the exponential growth and significant impact of digital content across various platforms.

While it enables innovation, connectivity, and new business models, it also raises concerns about data security, privacy, and the environmental impact of maintaining such vast data infrastructure.

Data Generation Projections and Trends for 2024

As technology evolves, so too does the way we create and manage data. The dynamic interplay between global changes and technological advancements continues to shape the landscape of data generation.

Several factors contribute to the growth and transformation in how data is treated, stored, and generated. Notably, data creation has surged dramatically, rising from 2 ZB in 2010 to 64.2 ZB in 2020.

In 2024, we can expect this trend to continue, reflecting the increasing importance of data in our lives. Let’s delve into the statistics and insights that illuminate the ongoing evolution of data generation.

How much data is created every day - Zettabyte scale 2013 to 2025

Annual Data Creation Set to Hit 180 Zettabytes by 2025

IDC projects that by 2025, the total data generated will reach 180 zettabytes. This remarkable growth is driven by the increasing number of devices and sensors producing data.

Currently, around 11 billion devices are connected to the Internet, a figure expected to nearly triple to 30 billion by 2020 and then almost triple again to 80 billion by 2025.

Data Created by Category

Video content dominates global data traffic, accounting for 53.72% of it, largely due to the prevalence of video on social media platforms. TikTok and YouTube, which are entirely centered around video, continue to expand their user bases each year.

Similarly, platforms like Facebook have adapted over time, with video now comprising 51% of the content shared. Currently, the leading categories driving internet data traffic are Video (53.72%), Social (12.69%), and Gaming (9.86%).

Growth of Data Creation Over the Years

The amount of data generated each year has surged dramatically. In 2010, annual data creation was 2 zettabytes, but by 2023, it skyrocketed to 120 zettabytes.

Remarkably, 90% of the world’s data has been produced in just the last two years. Over the past 13 years, data generation has increased by a factor of 60. Projections indicate that this figure could reach 181 zettabytes by 2025, representing a 150% increase.

The staggering figure of 402.74 million terabytes of data generated daily underscores the rapid pace of digital transformation in our world. As businesses, individuals, and technologies continues to progress, the volume of data will only increase.

Meanwhile, as we generate more information than ever before, the need for robust data management strategies and sustainable practices will be more critical than ever.
