Telstra has become the first Australian entity and the sixth globally to join UNESCO’s Business Council, aiming to advance the adoption of its Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Recommendation.

This UNESCO recommendation advocates for AI technologies to uphold human rights, dignity, and environmental sustainability through principles of transparency, accountability, and adherence to legal frameworks.

Telstra, alongside partners like Microsoft and Salesforce, will collaborate with UNESCO to influence policy on vital topics such as data governance and diversity.

The Business Council’s agenda includes creating an ethical impact assessment tool and joint initiatives to ensure AI contributes positively to society.

Kim Krogh Andersen, group executive of Product & Technology at Telstra, says this is about translating the Recommendation into practical action and tangible outcomes.  

“AI is a transformative technology that has the potential to benefit societies globally – but it requires very careful and deliberate stewardship,” Mr Krogh Anderson said.

“We’re proud to be the first Australian company to join the UNESCO Business Council and champion the increasingly critical cause of ethical and responsible AI,”

According to assistant director-general for social and human sciences of UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO is leading the international efforts to build ethical, responsible and inclusive AI frameworks worldwide, working with governments from 50 countries, G7, G20 and other international initiatives, and particularly with leading global companies.

Telstra’s latest collaboration extends its track record of leadership in ethical AI, both in Australia and globally. The company has been instrumental in partnering with the Australian government to trial and validate Australia’s AI Ethics Principles. Additionally, Telstra has co-authored the Responsible AI Playbook alongside the GSMA.

Within its operations, Telstra maintains a comprehensive Responsible AI Policy. This policy integrates guidelines, educational initiatives, advisory services, and specific risk management protocols.
