Simpler Payments For Healthcare Patients, Providers, And Payers

In the wake of COVID-19, healthcare providers are looking for more innovative payment solutions to lessen the burden of healthcare payments for all parties involved.

Healthcare providers aren’t just looking for a contactless solution, they want a touchless solution that simplifies the process, offering a more personalised patient experience, and allowing for more accurate accounting.

Healthcare payment transactions are, by nature, complex, because unlike a regular payment that involves just two parties, the consumer and the merchant, healthcare payments involve three parties, the consumer or patient, the merchant or healthcare provider, and the payer, who could be Medicare, a health insurer, workers compensation insurer, or the NDIS.

As a result, healthcare transactions are prone to high levels of transaction friction and are often not performed in real-time. They feature many manual hand-offs, processing by legacy technology systems at the payer or the practice, and as a result have reconciliation issues not seen in other payment types.

In addition, healthcare payers have a duty of care in making sure the patient attended the consultation with the healthcare practitioner to receive treatment, allowing them to discharge their responsibilities as an insurer. The legacy payment solutions have been designed with this in mind.

Bleu simplifies healthcare transactions and transforms the patient experience

Bleu works with payers to enable providers to deliver exceptional patient experiences through a secure touchless payment solution. With proximity technology, powered by Bluetooth, it allows providers to accept payments and claims from consumers using their mobile, via a branded consumer app or wallet. It’s a cashless, cardless, secure mobile solution.

The technology works to simplify payments and prevent some of the fraudulent activity seen in healthcare payments, such as swapping of Medicare credentials and private health insurance swipe-cards. Bleu technology lives in a personalized, authenticated app or digital wallet in the patient’s mobile phone, featuring two-factor-authentication, ensuring the right person attends the consultation, avoiding fraudulent claims.

By integrating Bleu technology into the patient app or wallet and the healthcare merchant practice management software, EFTPOS, claiming terminal or provider portal, the technology can seamlessly manage the payment process and provide the burden of proof that the patient attended the practice for their consultation and treatment.

Bluetooth lies at the heart of the solution, and the patient must be within Bluetooth range of the practitioner, otherwise the payment won’t authenticate. Typically, this ranges from under a metre, up to 30 metres.

There is a lack of viable solutions on the market with much of the real-time transaction processing systems relying on fixed-line telco connections to work. Bleu technology is mobile by nature, facilitating real time transaction processing and approvals using the patient’s mobile phone. This gives the opportunity to support patient care delivered also in people’s homes, away from the traditional bricks and mortar environment of the healthcare practice.

Bleu makes healthcare payments simple and secure.
