A Digital Transformation For Students at the University of Sydney Union

The University of Sydney Union (USU), a pioneering student-run organisation at the University of Sydney, has launched a major improvement to their digital platform, aimed at enhancing the online experience for students.

By incorporating advanced search functionality, hyper-personalisation features, and integrations with existing internal systems, the new platform is making it easier for students to navigate and find the information they need.

“Our aim was to help students get more from their time at University,” said Matter Design & Digital CEO, Nigel Poole.

The move comes in response to the increasing need for universities to provide personalised, tailored experiences for students, especially given the pandemic’s impact on traditional on-campus activities.

With the majority of students relying on digital channels to engage with their university, it has become essential to provide a user-friendly and seamless online experience.

The main features on the new platform include a highly intuitive search function that allows students to filter their search results and tailored content recommendations based on the student’s interests and preferences, which is powered by a composable commerce
architecture.

Composable commerce refers to a modular approach to building e-commerce platforms where different software components and services can be combined and integrated to create a customised solution that meets the unique needs of an organisation.

The solution was proposed by Sydney-based digital transformation agency, Matter Design &
Digital, who partnered with USU on the build.

“Due to the university’s multiple internal systems that need to be integrated for effective management, USU is one of our most compelling arguments for a Headless framework to date,” says Poole.

The enhanced digital experience is part of USU’s ongoing commitment to delivering world-class education and support to its students.

By partnering, Matter Design & Digital, and continually investing in their digital infrastructure, USU is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its student population.
